I’ve now had the pleasure of cruising four of Princess Cruises MedallionClass cruise ships. But I know that there are still many people who don’t understand what Princess Medallion technology is or how it will change your cruise experience.
Now more than ever, the Princess Medallion technology not only makes your cruise easy, it makes cruising safer.
Drawing from my experience cruising multiple Princess Medallion enabled ships, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about the new tech.
Plus, I’m sharing the top ways you can use your Princess medallion. This Princess MedallionClass information has been updated for 2022 after my recent Alaskan cruise on the medallion-enabled Majestic Princess ship.
What is Princess Medallion Class?
Princess MedallionClass is a wearable technology that integrates throughout the entire cruise ship. Your Princess Medallion syncs with the free MedallionClass app on your smart phone and with the many sensors located throughout the cruise ship.
Princess Medallion allows you a seamless, digital experience from the start. From the boarding and check in process to connecting with your cabin stewards, this wearable tech makes for a cruise vacation that’s as easy and contactless as possible.
Since the Sky Princess set sail in late 2019, all new Princess cruise ships have been built with Medallion Class technology integrated from the start. As of 2022, many of Princess Cruises ships have been refurbished to include the MedallionClass technology.
What is the Princess Medallion?
The Princess Medallion is a small disc-shaped piece of wearable technology that you’ll receive complimentary when you book your cruise.
The conveniently quarter-sized medallion comes with a lanyard which you can wear around your neck during your cruise.
If you’ve seen Apple’s Air Tag, they’re about the same size and actually have some similar features, with the ability to track yourself and your shipmates’ locations once aboard the cruise ship.
There are also several medallion accessories that you can purchase once on board your cruise. Whether you prefer a watch style, a necklace or a keychain, there are multiple convenient ways to wear your medallion with these accessories. The Princess medallion is both waterproof and magnetic, so it easily pops into the various accessories available for purchase.
Your Princess Medallion will connect seamlessly with the MedallionClass app on your phone and with the many sensors around the ship. The medallion has a multitude of purposes and perks, all of which I’ll be talking about in this post.
If you’re a first-time cruiser, a Princess MedallionClass ship is the perfect way to make your foray into cruising. And if you’re a veteran cruiser, this new tech is simple to use and will only make your cruise experience more relaxing.
Top 10 Ways to Use Your Princess Medallion
From one of the first Princess Medallion enabled ships in 2019 to the new MedallionClass Majestic Princess, the technology has gotten better and easier to use over time.
Here are the top ways you can use your Princess Medallion to make your cruise the best and most relaxing vacation ever.
1 – Your Medallion is Your Room Key
The days of scrambling through your purse or pocket to find your room key card are no more. The new Princess Medallion technology will sense you as you approach your room and automatically unlock it for you.
As someone who usually carries a lot of things when I travel, I can’t tell you what an amazing difference this has made in my cruise ship experience.
From the moment you arrive on the ship, a sense of relaxation overcome as you approach your stateroom and hear the click of the door unlock.
2 – Order Drinks Wherever You Are
The Princess Medallion allows you to order drinks and so much more from wherever you’re located in real time on the ship.
If you find yourself thirsty on the pool deck while soaking up the sun, simply open the MedallionClass app on your phone and select the OceanNow tab. Then, make your selection from the hundreds of drink options available.
Within minutes, a Princess server will hand deliver your beverage wherever you’re located. You can even customize your drink within the app!
This is one of the medallion features that’s been updated to perfection. As I mentioned, you can now chose from hundreds of drink options and customize your drink too.
Not only have there been hundreds of new drink options added to the OceanNow feature, but you can also order from tons of food options. Plus, you can use OceanNow to order stateroom necessities like towels and extra pillows.
And since Princess has new health and safety measure in place, you can also order things like turn down service in the evenings.
3 – Find Your Shipmates On Board
The first time I went on a cruise vacation, I remember being so nervous that I would lose track of where Cole was. Sure enough, it happened a few times on board the ship during that first cruise.
Luckily, we’ve never had to worry about losing each other once we started sailing on Princess MedallionClass ships. The Princess Medallion has a built-in tracker so you can see where your shipmates are at any moment during your cruise.
To enable this technology, you simply connect with your friends and family on the ship through the MedallionClass app. Then, as soon as you’re on board your Princess cruise ship, you’ll be able to locate them through the Shipmate section of the app. You can even request directions on how to get from your location to theirs on the app.
4 – Your Princess Medallion Doubles as Your Identification
The Princess Medallion makes your cruise vacations afer in more ways than one. As you prepare for your cruise, you’ll be prompted through your app to upload a photo of yourself. That photo will then be connected to your medallion so the crew can identiofy you around the ship and as you get on and off the cruise ship.
This made me especially feel safe as we got on and off the ship at the various ports. I knew that Princess staff had verification of exactly when I got off and on the ship through the medallion scanning process. It also makes the process of getting on and off the ship go more quickly and smoothly.
5 – Make Dinner Reservations
No longer do you have to worry about making dinner plans and reservations before your cruise vacation starts. You don’t even have to pick up the phone in your stateroom to do so!
You can simply use your MedallionClass app to easily make dinner reservations. Even if you wait until the day of! I do recommend making reservations as early as possible though. Whether you want to dine in one of the main dining rooms or chose specialty dining, you can access availability and make reservations right through the app.
You can even see the menus of each restaurant for every night. This is especially convenient for the main dining rooms whose menus change every night of the cruise. i
6 – Plan Your Schedule for the Day
The Princess Medallion app will also show you the ship’s daily schedule for every day of your cruise. If you’ve cruised before then you’ll know that there are endless things to do and see on your ship. From live music and theatrical performances to game show and workout classes, there’s always so much going on at once.
WIth Princess Medallion technology, you can simply use your app or the multiple interactive screens throughout the ship to view the activities happening during your cruise. You can even chose to add them to your personal itinerary on the app and easily access directions to
7 – Never Get Lost on Your Cruise Ship
One of the best features of Princess Medallion technology is that you’ll never have to worry about getting lost on your cruise ship.
If you’ve cruised before, it’s almost certain that you’ve gotten lost a time or two while getting to know the layout of your ship. And for first-time cruisers, it’s certain to happen more than just a couple of times.
Princess Medallion technology features interactive maps both on the interactive touch screens throughout the ship and within your app.
On the maps, you can see where everything is located on your cruise ship and even request custom directions on how to get from your exact location to your chosen destination. This technology has definitely saved Cole and I from being late to dinner reservations.
8 – Communicate With Your Shipmates
Part of Princess Cruises new Medallion technology includes MedallionNet. It truly is the best wifi at sea, so you can remain connected to check back in at home when you need it.
But if cruising to you means disconnecting from your phone and emails, then fear not. The Princess MedallionClass app allows you to do just that while still providing a way for you to easily communicate with family and friends who are on your cruise vacation.
Another feature built into the MedallionClass app is the ability to chat with your shipmates. So even if you decide not to purchase a wifi package on your cruise, you can communicate with your friends and family on your cruise vacation.
9 – Connect With Your Cabin Steward
You can now connect directly with your cabin steward in a simple and contactless way through the MedallionClass app. The app has a feature where you can send a message directly to your cabin steward in case you need anything.
Even better, your cabin steward will know exactly when you enter and leave your room, so they can come tidy your room at the perfect time.
10 – Leave Your Wallet in Your Cabin
Another one of the top ways to use your Princess Medallion is as your method of payment. You won’t even have to worry about grabbing your wallet for dinner or for when you shop around the ship.
Your medallion is connected to your credit card or preferred method of payment and as you purchase drinks, merchandise or even play in the casino, the Princess crew can automatically and quickly process your payment.
