Looking for some indoor Halloween decor ideas that will really add some magic to your house? I’m so excited to share our Harry Potter Halloween decorations. Plus, how you can easily DIY this Halloween mantle inspired by the wizarding world.
Our Halloween Mantle Decor
Last year for the first time, we put Halloween decorations outside and inside our house. I loved the way our Grandin Road Halloween decorations looked so much that I couldn’t imagine not decorating for spooky season now.
One of my favorite parts of last year’s indoor Halloween decor was our bat mantle. This year, I knew still wanted to go all out with our Halloween mantle, but I decided to take a different approach. But don’t worry, the felt bats still found a place in our Halloween house decorations.
Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved Harry Potter. I started reading the first book in third grade and have followed the book series and the movies since.
With its witches, wizards, magic spells and creepy creatures, Harry Potter and Halloween go hand in hand. I knew it would be the perfect theme for this year!

Our Halloween House Decorations – The Details
As you can see from our non-seasonal living room decor and our Halloween and Christmas mantle decorations, our large antique mirror and our wooden candlesticks are a year-round staple.
We simply switch out a wreath or other decorative accent to layer over the mirror to go with the season. Then we swap out either the candle color or candle rings with faux greenery, depending on the season.
This spooky season, I decorated the mantle starting with the same staples I used last year for Halloween. Starting with these cob web lights on either sides of the mirror.
Then, I got out my assortment of black, silver and metallic pumpkins out to assemble alongside the new Harry Potter decor additions.
I actually only ended up using two of our year-round staple wooden candlesticks. Then, I swapped our faux vine candle rings and white candles with some black candles to add a spooky touch.
Another thing I used again from last year’s bat halloween mantle is this animated crow cage. The cage itself looks just like the one Harry keeps his owl Hedwig in and pretty much all creepy animals feel like they belong at Hogwarts.
Next, I needed to find some new Halloween decorations to add the Harry Potter vibes. Luckily, my go-to brand for Halloween decor, Grandin Road, had lots of fun new items that look like they came straight out of Hogwarts.
The flying white owls were the perfect nod to Hedwig and the other owl companions often seen in the wizarding world. I love how realistic they look!
I swapped the bats on the mirror this year for this set of giant spiders. They reminded me of the spiders that Harry and Ron encounter in the Dark Forest in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I arranged them to look as though they were all crawling in the same direction as a nod to the scene.
As the symbol of House Slytherin, I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a snake somewhere in my Harry Potter Halloween mantle. I especially love this gorgeous gold snake decorative accent from Grandin Road.
I actually accidentally broke the snake in half when unboxing it (oops!) So I just improvised and used each half on the sides of this green pumpkin to look like it’s slithering around it.
What’s a witch or wizard without his broom? When I saw this amazing animated floating broom, I knew it would be perfect to compliment our Harry Potter fireplace theme. I love how realistic it looks!
There’s a button on the broom that makes witch sounds and rolls around on the floor to make it look as though its floating. Everly is absolutely terrified of it, but I think she’ll do better with it next year.Luckily, it still looks really cool as Halloween decor when its idle.
Speaking of pumpkins, I also added a few new ones to the mix this year. Of course, I had to bring back my mini “I solemnly swear I’m up to no good” Harry Potter pumpkin. I got it last year from At Home Stores, and it’s one of the things that inspired me to do this theme!
The gorgeous color and the cool dragon scale texture of this large green pumpkin made it the perfect piece to add a little more Slytherin style to the mantle. I also added a tall black dragon scale pumpkin to the mantle, which ended up being so large that I used it on the floor.
Finally, I couldn’t resist the cool texture and metallic color of these gold geometric pumpkins. They blended in seamlessly with the various metallic pumpkins I got last year for the Halloween mantle.
For the final touches, I added a couple of my Harry Potter hardcover books. Then as a nod to the House of Gryffindor, I placed a scarf bearing the house colors. Finally, a pair of Harry Potter glasses and a Quidditch Snitch ball can be seen scattered along the mantle.
As a last nod to Harry Potter, I added spelled out a spell from the series on my letter board…”winguardium leviosa!”
Harry Potter Fireplace Letters Tutorial
I found a few images on Pinterest that recreated the Harry Potter scene of the Hogwarts letters flying from the fireplace. I absolutely loved the idea and decided to take my own spin on it.
With a few super affordable items from Amazon, creating this effect on our mantle was super easy to do. The full steps and items needed are listed below.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Large Vintage Envelopes
- Small Vintage Envelopes
- Fairy Light Curtain
- Adhesive Hooks
- Sticky Dots
- Clear Shipping Tape
FLOATING FIREPLACE LETTERS DIRECTIONS:
- Address Your Letters. The envelopes I purchased above come with a vintage, worn look. They even have a red wax seal printed on the back. I tried to use different hand writing and ended up making up several random addresses. Mostly inspired by Harry Potter or Disney characters.
- Attach Fairy Lights to Fireplace Using Adhesive Hooks. Attach 10 of the adhesive wall hooks along the inside of your fireplace, at the top. The fairy light curtain I found has 10 light strings, and each with a hook on the top. Unravel your fairy light strings one at a time, attaching the hook of each to the hooks now inside your fireplace. Note – DO NOT do this if you plan to actually use your fireplace while the decor is up.
- Attach Fairy Lights to Top of Mantle or Ceiling. Depending on how your fireplace is set up and how high your ceiling is, you can choose the best place to attach the tops of your fairy lights. We have crazy high ceilings, so it only made sense to attach them to the top of the mirror on our mantle. since the fairy lights are wire and super lightweight, I just bended them a bit and placed them behind the mirror. The sticky dots should also work to attach them though!
- Attach Letters to Fairy Lights. The final step is to simply attach your letters randomly along the fairy lights. TA DA! Your Harry Potter Hogwarts letters fireplace is complete.
Our Harry Potter Outfits
Women’s Harry Potter Gryffindor Dress | Toddler Hogwarts Uniform Dress | Snuggle This Muggle Harry Potter Onesie
I had to take a little time to talk about our Harry Potter-inspired outfits. There are so many cute Harry Potter clothes for girls, women and even baby clothes too. If we’re going to turn our house into Hogwarts, we might as well dress the part.
I was SO excited to find that Unique Vintage had a Harry Potter collection this year for Halloween. This Gryffindor dress was one of my fave pieces from the collection, but there’s so much more to love.
I’ve been eyeing Harry Potter baby clothes since before I even got pregnant with Everly. This Snuggle This Muggle set was so perfect for our newborn wizard Maxon to wear.
Finally, Everly’s Hogwarts Gryffindor dress is by our favorite character-inspired brand for children, Only Little Once. One of the things love about their dresses is that they’re made to play in! They’re so comfortable!!
Stay tuned for more of our Halloween and holiday decor!
