As promised, this year I’m going to be sharing a lot more home features here on the blog. It will especially be a regular thing here on VF once Cole and I move into our first-ever home later this year (eeekkk – can’t wait!), but until then, I’ll be sharing a few peeks at our current space (which we also love and have been renting since we got married!).
A new house isn’t the only thing new that 2017 has in store for us. If you follow me on instagram you’ve probably already met Miss Lady, the chocolate Labrador puppy we chose out of the 12 puppies that our dog Lucky and Marley had to make a forever home with. Today, Miss Lady (who now has her own instagram account she shares with Lucky – follow her here!) and I are tickled to reveal our living room, featuring our AMAZING new carpet (which she will probably enjoy as much as we will) from my friends at FLOR. If you haven’t heard about FLOR yet and you’re in the market for a new rug or carpeting of any size/style for your home, you’re gonna wanna read this! Click the read more button below to learn why I’ve got MAJOR heart eyes for FLOR + see our living room reveal!
A Lesson on How to Live & Decorate With a Dude
When Cole and I first moved in and began decorating our living room, I was super nervous to introduce anything even remotely girly into our shared spaces (which included everything except my home office space). I’d never lived with a guy before, and Cole had always lived in a bachelor pad with three or more dudes, so I thought anything patterned or colorful would freak him out (I would have never even uttered the word pink!). Using advice from my dad (and advice I highly recommend!), I even set aside a whole area of our two bedroom home (the dining or game room area) to be “his man cave” and it quickly became that, with sports memorabilia, deer heads and brown-leather-everything filling the room to capacity. This resulted in an entire house that was dominated by neutrals and a home office space that nearly hurt your eyes to look at because it was so colorful. My office (which you can see here!), or “the blogger room” as Cole likes to call it, became the dumping ground for anything and everything patterned, colorful, or girly (and also Disney). Flash forward to eleven months later, and as I was pulling my Christmas tree and decorations last November, I looked around at our living room and thought, no more! I was determined to add some color to our living area, and I already had many of the pieces to start since my home office was busting at the seams with colorful decor. I began the transformation that day, and when Cole came home from work that evening he NEVER. EVEN. NOTICED. All this time I was so nervous to introduce color into our home and Cole not only didn’t mind, he didn’t even wink an eye.
Our Living Room Transformation
This was a learning experience for sure (which I’ll save for another time!), but I was so thrilled to finish the transformation that I immediately got online and did some shopping for more home decor accessories to enliven our living room. And voila! You can see the results in the above photos. Since I don’t have a full blog post featuring our living room before the colorful transformation, below is an instagram photo I posted not long after we moved in so you can get an idea of what it looked like.
The skeleton of the room is still the same – the same layout; the same furniture. The difference is in the accessories. There is so much you can do to change the entire look of a room with simple, affordable pieces like throw pillows, decorative accents or a new rug, which is exactly how I transformed our living room.
To start, I added a little thematic fun. Since our bar cart is currently set up in our living room, I already had a corner that had some tropical flair (you can see photos of our bar cart here), so I decided to continue the theme by adding a pop of tropical print and bright color with this darling little throw pillow I scooped up from Dormify. This Kate Spade New York coffee table book perfectly blended the vibrant green in with the whole room while this gold pineapple tumbler continued the tropical vibes. For the remaining colors, I first opted for a blush pink to soften the bright green with these velvet throw pillows. My hot pink serving tray and additional coffee table book helped balanced the pink hues in the room. For the final color addition to the room, I went for a classic with a gorgeous navy hue, starting with this velvet navy cushioned foot stool. I already had several accent pieces in the same navy and gold color mix like these agate coasters and this decorative bowl we had received from our wedding registry from Anthropologie.
It’s All in The Flor
Last of all, I wanted to add a few bold patterns to the room since all of our furniture are solid neutrals. That’s where my friends from FLOR came in. Our previous area rug in the living room was a blue-ish grey color with a basic pattern. It’s beautiful and I’ll definitely use it in our next home when we expand, but it didn’t do much for our living space. My friends at FLOR offered up the perfect alternative – a custom rug in whatever size I could dream up, in endless color and pattern options. Not only do they offer endless options and ways to get creative with your flooring, FLOR’s unique concept ensures that your rug will have a place no matter where you move or how you decide to transform your room in the future. Here’s how! FLOR takes a unique approach to carpeting and rugs by offering small carpet squares that allow you to carpet everything from the smallest space of your home to an entire room. You can get creative and mix it up with complementary colors and patterns or go with an all-over solid or print like the leopard print I did. What I love even more about FLOR is the amazing delivery and installation process. The carpet squares come exactly as you’d expect…in small, easy-to-move squares that you can transfer to your space and put together like a puzzle! When Cole and I move or decide we want a different look for our living room, this leopard beauty can easily be taken apart and put back together as small bathroom rugs or as a long hallway rug…the options are endless! And each of the squares feature sturdy grips beneath them so they won’t move around when you walk on them. I’m OBSESSED with this concept and I’m pretty certain I’ll be needing FLOR carpeting for every space of our home from now on.

February 2, 2017 at 8:36 pmThat’s so funny that you had a designated man cave for him! I do the same with my boyfriend. He put TWO huge leather reclining couches in there (they plug into the wall and have remotes). It’s basically a scene out of a horror movie. Anyway, he also loves anything brown. I’ll have to heed your advice and slowly bring pops of color into our home. I love your rug and your pink robe!
