There are certain years in fashion that are mega milestones as far as new trends are concerned, and while I’m no professional fashion forecaster (yes, that’s an actual job and one that was definitely up there on my dream job list), I think it’s safe to say that this year, 2017, is one of them. When trends take a major shift in everyday staples like denim (hello, mom jeans I swore I’d never wear) and footwear (mules, flats, and kitten heels have replaced the mega-high heels of yesterday, which I’m not mad about), you know there’s a movement happening in the world of fashion. That’s why I thought it would be the perfect time to start a new series on the blog, Trend to Try, where I take my spin on a new trend or must-have item, (and I’ll go ahead and apologize for the un-clever name, but SEO ya know?!)
For my first post, I’m styling a trend that’s giving me major fifth grade, late nineties Limited Too-circa deja vu…the mega ruffle pant. Click on the read more button below to get the full scoop on this ruffle pants outfit featuring the most darling, daring red cropped ruffle cigarette pants.
The Ruffled Pant
The ruffle bonanza has not only affected the hem of pants. Lately ruffles have been added to everything from tops (like this one I just styled) to denim (like these I also styled earlier this year) and everything in-between. There’s something about the mega ruffled pant, however, that especially makes a statement. Perhaps it’s the way the flared pants create noticeable movement when you walk or the way they show off your shoes, but I personally love it! What I especially love about this pair of red cigarette ruffle pants is that they come in petite, tall and plus size. For sizing references, although I’m 5’5″ 1/2, I went with the petite in a size 2, because I have a long torso and short legs. I loved the way the ruffle pants fit, and you’ll love the price even more…just $60! If the red color is a little too bright for you, there are several black and neutral options in the ruffled pant silhouette. I linked up more ruffle pants for you to shop below.

While ruffle pants could easily be dressed up with pumps and a blazer for work, I decided to style this red pair for a fun and casual weekend look with a few playful graphic prints like this cozy heart tee and this amazing star print cardigan sweater. Call me patriotic, but I love the look of red and navy together and this duo worked perfectly. To accessorize, the whole you-can’t-wear-navy-with-black thing is so not a thing (in my opinion), so I thought these super comfy black peep toe booties by Steve Madden would be perfect for adding a little length to my legs and really making the ruffle pants stand out. Okay so another trend that’s giving me late 90’s flash backs is the fiddler’s hat trend. I know we didn’t call the hats that back then (I actually can’t remember what we called them!), but now, the trend is being referred to as fiddler or fisherman caps, and I’m loving the throwback trend! I especially love this fiddler’s cap in black by Brixton and it was the perfect way to add another dash of black to help neutralize the super colorful outfit. Not only is it super comfortable and has actually gone with so many of my outfits, but the price is amazing AND the hats even come in sizes so they can fit petite heads or heads with a bit larger of a circumference like mine (I got a size medium and it fits perfectly!) The hat is available in lots of color and material options like navy, olive, leather and more!
I finished the outfit off with these playful heart shaped faux pearl earrings, my new fave red sunnies and an embellished top handle bag.
Stay tuned for more trends to try here on the blog!
