It’s officially time to take your holiday photos so you can order your Christmas cards. If you’re struggling with what to wear for family Christmas photos, I’m sharing 8 ideas to make coordinating family outfits as easy as pumpkin pie.
Here Are 8 Ideas on What To Wear for Family Christmas Photos
You might have seen on instagram that Cole and I took our family photos for our holiday cards last month so we could order our cards early. We’re not usually the do-things-ahead-of-time kind of people, but I was so glad to cross this off our to-do list. family. Christmas cards is always a big one, especially now that we’re a family of three.
One of the first things I asked myself when I started planning our holiday photos was, “what do we wear?” Whether your family is just the two of you, or you’re a family of five, deciding what to wear for the perfect family holiday photo isn’t easy. So to make it easier, I put together 8 simple ideas on what to wear for your family Christmas photos. I’ve also included some suggestions on where to take the photos for your holiday cards.
Before you dive in, one quick tip! Don’t worry about the design of your card until after you’ve had your photos taken. With so many designs that you can easily pop your family Christmas photo into, you’re almost guaranteed to find the perfect holiday card design.
I also wanted to add in a quick disclaimer. Cole and I have only sent out 4 family Christmas photos so far (& one was a photo from our wedding!) So I don’t have a ton of photos we’ve actually used for our family Christmas cards. But since I’ve styled and shot so many holiday photographs over the last few years, I have tons of ideas on what to wear. While some of these shots might be of just me or Everly and me, I’ve included shopping options that will work for all of your family members.

Matching Plaid Family Christmas Card Outfits
If you’re wanting your family Christmas cards to have a traditional, timeless holiday look, then you simply can’t go wrong with matching plaid patterns. Coordinating plaid is what we chose for our holiday cards this year, and I love how they turned out!
I referred to our plaid as “coordinating” because the plaid doesn’t actually match. Believe it or not, I found all three of our plaid looks at completely different stores. So don’t worry about browsing the internet for hours to search for that perfectly matching plaid for everyone on your family. As long as it’s a similar plaid color palette, it should work great for your family Christmas photos.
SETTING IDEAS FOR COORDINATED PLAID FAMILY CHRISTMAS PHOTOS:
When it comes to picking the perfect setting for matching plaid looks in your holiday photos, a simple background will work best. We were limited to the front of our white brick house for our family photos due to time constraints. This was actually taken just 10 minutes before we went to the airport. But matching family plaid outfits would also work great at a Christmas tree farm or in front of any solid-colored neutral wall or building.

Pair a white sequin skirt with a white lace top like I did in the above photo or rock a white holiday cocktail dress. Coordinate your family’s Christmas’ card looks with things like white button ups and kakis for the boys and sweet white tulle dresses for the little girls. Big girls can opt for white knit sweaters or sweater dresses. You can see and shop some of my favorite white holiday looks for the whole family below.
