7 Steps to The Perfect Christmas Village Display

It wasn’t until this year that I finally figured out the secret sauce to creating the perfect Christmas village display.

I searched Google and Pinterest for hours trying to find examples of Christmas village displays that I loved for inspiration. And to be honest, I was very disappointed in the results.

A search for “Christmas village displays” online brings up cheesy, pyramid shelves made just for displaying your Christmas village. Or mammoth-sized Christmas village collections taking over the dining room table (atop a gaudy holiday table cloth, to make things worse).

Not to be rude, but much of what I found was downright tacky. No wonder why Christmas village displays have become a thing of the past.

I knew I’d seen Christmas village displays I loved (clearly they just weren’t photographed for the internet). So, I closed my laptop and drew on that vision to create our Disney Christmas village display.

Here are the 5 simple steps you need to create a modern, magical Christmas village display in your home.

Step 1 – Decide Where Your Christmas Village Will Be Displayed

Before you begin creating your Christmas village display, decide on the perfect location to display it. This will mostly depend on how big your collection is.

For example, if you’re starting out with a smaller collection of three pieces, a smaller area such as a console table or a coffee table (if you don’t have any toddlers) would be he perfect spot.

If you have a medium-to-larger collection like me, opt for a larger area such as a buffet like we did or on top of your mantle.

If you have an extra larger collection, consider breaking it up and displaying part of the collection on a console table and part on your mantle. Or, break the Christmas village up into a couple rows on your shelf.

Personally, I would avoid using a large area like a dining room table so it doesn’t overwhelm your space. Plus, you don’t want to take over functional piece of furniture like a table where guests eat.

Step 2 – Gather The Supplies You’ll Need

Whether your Christmas village is a collection of two pieces or 20, there are a few things you’ll need other than your actual village pieces to create your Christmas village display.

  • Christmas village pieces
  • Mini Christmas trees
  • A couple bags of snow
  • Different sized shoe boxes (or other similar-sized boxes)
  • Some extra Christmas props such as colorful glass trees, your favorite character ornaments, etc.
  • Extension cord and power strip
  • A seasonal backdrop (like our pine tree print from Minted)

A quick note about your village pieces. Don’t be afraid to mix and match your village houses with varied brands, collections, sizes, etc.

For example, this year, we added these giant gingerbread houses from Grandin Road to our collection and I absolutely love the playful element they added and he way the two contrasting heights looked together. I also mixed in pieces from the Disney Princess collection with Beauty and the Beast’s castle, which you can see in the below image.

Step 3 – Arrange Your Shoebox Base And Add Snow

This step was key for finally creating our perfect Disney Christmas village display this year.

No matter the size of your village, using shoe boxes or other similar sized boxes is essential to create height and making your Christmas village look more interesting and believable.

Test the layout of your village by placing the houses where they’d fit best. Rearrange until you found the right look. Don’t worry about your mini trees, characters, accessories and fillers- they will fit in much easier than you think!

Step 4 – Add Snow

Once you’ve found teh perfect shoe box arrangement, remove the village houses and cover with your bag(s) of snow.

Helpful hint – try to keeo all the snow together. Slwoyl pull it apart to thin it out and shape it around your village display.Once the snow is completely town apart, it’s difficult to piece it back together for a natural look.

Step 5 – Add Your Christmas Village Houses + Plug Them In

After you have your snow perfect placed to cove rthe boxes and your preferred display, you’ll want to addthe mainstays of yoiur Christmas village – the village houses!

Be sure to space the village houses apart so you have enough room to add trees and accessories later (but not too much!)

As you add each house, be sure to run the cord behind it and plug it into your power strip, so you can be sure it will properly reach.

Then, gently pull apart a hole in the snow to set your house into. This keeps your village houses safe and sturdy within your display. It also adds a more natural look with the snow surrounding each village house.

Step 6 – Add Your Mini Christmas Trees and/or Christmas Flora and Fauna

No village is complete without a few Christmas trees or some kind of holiday flora and fauna. It helps add variety and interest to your village and makes it feel more like, well, a village.

Add the largest trees first, and keep adding from largest to small. I also love adding small ornaments to the trees that coordinate with our colorful Disney Christmas village.

Along with our traditional mini Christmas trees, we also added candy-colored glass trees we received from Grandin Road. I loved the fun, unexpected color and texture they added to our colorful Christmas village.

Step 7 – Add Characters and Accessories

A Christmas village isn’t complete without a little character. That is, the characters who live in your village.

Whether that’s Mickey and friends, Whoville characters, classic Christmas characters or a mix of them, adding characters to your village is the final step to making it magical.

Don’t worry about purchasing authentic village characters. If you don’t have any, simply pick out some character ornaments and find a place for them in your village.

We purchased a few Disney Christmas village accessories for ours like this Mickey Water Tower and Mickey Mouse tree. But you can easily find props and things around your home or within the Christmas decor you already own to add some playful pops to your Christmas village display.
