If you follow me on instagram, you may have noticed that Cole and I spent a little time visiting Texas’ Northern neighbor about a month ago. Our weekend visit to Oklahoma City was full of amazing food and some really fun, unique experiences, and lots of memories we’ll always cherish. In case you have plans to visit Oklahoma City or if you’re a DFW local like me and are seeking a little getaway (just a 3 hour drive up 35 y’all!), Ive put together a little Oklahoma City travel guide on where to stay, what to eat and what to do when you visit! Click on the read more button below for the full scoop.
Where to Stay?
21c Hotel – During our three-day weekend trip, Cole and I got to stay at 21c Hotel a modern, industrial museum-meets-hotel concept with a boutique feel. The spacious rooms have a New York City SOHO loft apartment feel and I immediately fell in love with the gorgeous, giant windows that filled the room with light and offered up a great view too (for all my fellow non-morning people, not to worry…they come with blackout curtains!) Located in downtown Oklahoma City, it’s just blocks away from tons of things to see and do in OKC, plus, it boasts it’s own amazing restaurant, Mary Eddy’s (keep scrolling for more on that) and is in walking distance to lots more.
Where to Eat?
When it comes to good food, OKC has an overwhelming amount of amazing restaurants to choose from. From darling and delicious brunch spots to the yummiest Southern comfort food with a modern twist, there’s an abundance of choices, no matter what you’re in the mood for, and Cole and I got to try out a few amazing spots during our visit.
Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge
This was the restaurant I mentioned above that was inside the hotel we stayed at, 21c Hotel. The menu boasts New American cuisine by chef Jason Campbell, and Cole and I were in for a real treat during our meal. Not only did we decide to order appetizers, entrees and desserts of our own, but we were also pleasantly surprised when the chef also sent out a few extra items in between every course. Some of the highlights of our meal…to start, there were crispy, delicious chicken lettuce wraps and a unique and refreshing mix of popcorn, watermelon and avocado (SO yummy y’all!). For our entrees, we feasted on seared salmon, pork shoulder and mac and cheese. We finished it off with the Smore’s Dutch Baby (a MUST have for anyone who dines here!!) and the key lime semifreddo. And then we officially entered food coma status.
Not only will you love the food at Mary Eddy’s, you’ll also love the gorgeous interiors. Taking inspiration from the 100-year-old building’s roots as an emblem of industrial innovation in Oklahoma City, the building boasts a modern industrial look that pays homage to its unique history. Whether or not you decide to stay at Hotel 21C during your Oklahoma City visit, this restaurant should definitely be on your list!
Aurora
Located in the vibrant, historic plaza district of Oklahoma City, Aurora is a darling, quaint breakfast and brunch spot that has some seriously amazing coffee and food. Cole and I loved how cozy this spot was and were so impressed by our coffee drinks alone. We couldn’t resist their made-from-scratch biscuit sandwiches, so we each decided to try one out. They did not disappoint! I went for the Plaza Jam, a savory biscuit topped with applewood bacon, whipped cream cheese, scrambled egg, heirloom tomato jam while Cole opted for the Spin on Lox, a yummy biscuit topped with cold smoked salmon, whipped cream cheese, capers, red onion, tomato heirloom jelly, runny egg. Typing this is making me SO hungry for one right now y’all!!
The Jones Assembly
Cole and I loved this restaurant so much that we actually ate here twice! Located in walking distance from the 21c Hotel, the Jones Assembly is Oklahoma City’s newest spot for amazing food, spirits and live music. I actually had several people dm me on instagram with recommendations about going to this spot before we dined there. When we walked in, we were so impressed by how enormous the indoor-outdoor space is, and by how beautiful it is too! Definitely an awesome social spot, whether you wanna go for a date night or go with a group of girls for drinks and liv music. But the food was UNREAL y’all! The first night, Cole and I each got a pizza (they’re all so unique and yummy!) and the next evening, we opted for some Southern comfort food with the Nashville Hot Chicken and a burger.
What to Do?
There are SO many adventures that await when you visit Oklahoma City! From baseball and botanical gardens to a ferris wheel that offers up the most incredible views and the country’s only river rafting adventure located within the city (which we unfortunately had to skip due to baby girl!), you’ll find so much to see and do in OKC. Keep scrolling to see some of the highlights of what Cole and I got to do on our weekend road trip. Big 12 Baseball Championship
So the original reason Cole and I chose this particular weekend in May to go was to watch the Longhorns in the Big 12 Baseball Championship. I’ve actually visited Oklahoma City quite a few times before for this very reason, because Cole was a pitcher for the Longhorns while we were in college. Unfortunately, the Longhorns didn’t do quite as well as expected (they were out of the tournament before we even got there), so we spent a lot less time at the baseball field than expected, but we did go to the Dodgers Field to watch the final game on Sunday. Visiting OKC during the Big 12 Baseball Championship is always such a fun time to go though if you’re a sports fan. It happens during the last weekend of May, so mark your calendars!
Myriad Botanical Gardens
Located in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, the Myriad Botanical Gardens are an absolutely beautiful, indoor tropical conservatory that’s an absolutely must-see when you visit OKC. You’ll feel like you’ve escaped the hustle and bustle of the city as you walk through beautiful, lush gardens and trees.
Explore the Plaza District
Cole and I got lots of recommendations from locals and from my friends on instagram about exploring the historical Plaza District. After our scheduled brunch at Aurora, located in the heart of the Plaza District, we could definitely see why, so we planned a little afternoon visit to walk around and explore. From yummy ice cream shops to amazing little boutiques, this vibrant, colorful area was so much fun to explore!
Ride The OKC Wheeler
Whether you have kiddos or you’re with your hubs, you’ve gotta check out the OKC Wheeler. Located just outside of downtown, the adorable ferris wheel offers up amazing views of the skyline and the are ai just so darn cute with tons of open space to play, picnic tables, hammocks and more!
