Modern Farmhouse Living Room Inspiration

As promised, I’m continuing my blog post series featuring all of the spaces in our new home we bought and renovated last fall. My first post was on Everly’s nursery, and today I’m SO excited to finally reveal photos of the space we spend the most time in…our living room!! You may remember the living room refresh I did last year in our rental home featuring some fun, tropical chic items from one of my favorite brands for affordable, designer-inspired furniture and home decor, Grandin Road.

I absolutely loved how unique each of the items were and I was so pleasantly surprised at how well-made each piece was (I’m actually storing many of those tropical chic -themed items for a future room idea I have…stay tuned!!) So you can imagined how thrilled I was to work with Grandin Road once again to furnish and decorate the living room space in our new home. Cole and I completely gutted and renovated the home (scroll to the bottom of this post for before photos!!) and were able to pick out every detail from the paint to the floor. So, I felt like I had a lot more freedom to truly make this space feel like home, and I absolutely love how it turned out.

The space is part modern farmhouse-inspired, with a little bit of Texas flair and cozy French country cottage vibes mixed in. Keep scrolling to see every detail in our small modern farmhouse living room, the inspiration behind it all, and how I was able to couple the styles of both myself and Cole for a space that truly feels like home.

Our House Layout

Our home is on the smaller side, but is just the perfect size for our small family – with three bedrooms and a layout that was typically of the 1980’s…a kitchen that’s separate from the living space. While this wasn’t ideal (#housegoals for our next home!), we did have a larger living space to work with, so we decided to combine both our living room and dining room in that area. I’ll be sharing details on the dining room portion of the space later this month on the blog, so stay tuned! But for now, I’m just focusing on our living room area. As you can see from the before images, the space does have really high ceilings, so we loved that aspect. I’m also realizing that I didn’t get any shots that feature the ceiling + light fixture and faux wood beam we added to the room (sorry y’all!) so I’ll go back in and add some images of that later this week!

The Paint + Floor

We wanted to start out with a clean, neutral palette (I was sooo not a fan of the gold-ish brown walls in our previous home!), so we opted for a wall paint that we knew would work with any decor (and would appeal to anyone since we probably will grow out of this home within the next few years) We chose Sherwin Williams “Repose Gray”, a very light grey hue that’s perfectly in between warm and cool and will literally go with anything and everything. The living room area previously had some dull-colored wood flooring that had been pretty damaged over the years, so we ripped it out and replaced it with some dark (but not too warm!) brown wood-like porcelain tile. I absolutely LOVE using porcelain wood-like tile rather than actual wood at this stage in our lives because you can’t damage it like regular wood and with our little hot mess + two large indoor dogs, it just makes more sense for us (and is more cost-effective too!)

Our Living Room Furniture

When it comes to selecting furniture, I’m all about finding items that are classic and neutral, so you can switch up the style of the room whenever you please without the headache of having to replace the costly, bulky furniture in the room. I absolutely LOVED these amazing white slipcover couches from Grandin Road to start. I’ve always wanted white couches, but have been hesitant because of the fear of them getting messy, but these are stain-resistant AND so easy to pop in the wash when they do acquire some spills (which I have already done, more than a couple of times!) The couches  are super spacious and extremely comfy, so if we have more than a couple of guests staying the night, they can crash on the couches and sleep comfortably. I also loved that the couches came with four fluffy euro-sized pillows each. I ended up placing shams over four of them and keeping the other four white (read on for details on the throw pillows). One of the other things we did in our home renovations was to update the mantle. We added Chicago brick going all the way up the wall for a rustic, farmhouse feel and put in a warm mahogany wood beam that matched our faux wood ceiling beam and our front door (which we also replaced!) I wanted to add a bit more natural wood to the space, so this gorgeous, modern wood bookcase from Grandin Road was the perfect find. I thought about adding an accent chair, but decided to keep with the neutral theme for the reasons mentioned above and I adore this roomy, cozy studded wing chair we got from Grandin Road. I also knew we would need a place to store Everly’s toys. This storage ottoman in a creamy white hue was absolutely perfect for storing Everly’s toys in a pretty and safe way (it comes in dozens of color options!)  We kept the mirrored coffee table from our previous space and the bronze and glass media console we use for beneath our TV (I told ya – getting neutral pieces is always beneficial!)

Our Living Room Decor Theme

For this room, I really wanted to combine the style of both myself and Cole, so we had to do away with some of the pink, leopard and tropical vibes from our previous space that spoke more to my style and find a more balanced theme for our living room. As you may know, Cole is Texas through and through, and is obsessed with hunting, fishing, ranching…all of it! And his interior preferences definitely speak to that. My interior style, on the other hand, is more of an eclectic love of traditional, transitional, art deco, etc., but I’ve always loved the traditional-yet-cozy look of French country interiors, and I felt that the style would work great with Cole’s rustic farmhouse vibes. Thankfully, Grandin Road had tons of options when it came to finding decor to make our living room truly feel like us.

Our Living Room Decor

As I’ve said, I think the best way to incorporate a theme into a space is through your decor, so Cole and I did just that when picking out the decorations and accent pieces for our living room. To add Cole’s Texas farmhouse feel to the room, I opted for this distressed gate wall art we found at Grandin Road, a cowhide rug Cole received as a wedding gift from his mother (and was previously in the confines of his man cave), some deer hide-inspired pillowcases from Minted and a set of wooden marketplace trays from Grandin Road.

To add the French country feel that I love so much, I started by adding some blue and white chinoiserie vases to our bookshelf and continued the blue and white color scheme with some dusty blue velvet shams, and some blue floral accent pillow cases I found at Minted. I ended up using these four euro shams to place over four of the eight white pillows that came with the couches. Then, I selected this gorgeous distressed rectangle mirror to act as the centerpiece of our mantle. I topped it off with a faux magnolia wreath and a set of distressed wooden candle holders with some added some mossy accents to give a bright, Spring feel to the mantle. I’ve always loved this antique oval mirror we got from Cole’s grandmother and I was so excited to use it as the centerpiece of the room. When placed in between the gate wall art we chose, I feel like the wall perfectly mixes both me and Cole’s individual styles and sets the tone for the room.

We also added some modern elements to the room, like with the gallery wall featuring minimalist gold frames with some of my favorite images of our family in sepia tone. The large white table lamp, faux fig leaf tree and large woven area rug also helped add a modern feel to the room.

In the end, my love for French country decor seamlessly integrated with Cole’s preferences for Texas farmhouse vibes and we ended up with a living room that just feels…us! To shop each of the pieces we selected, scroll up to the links at the top of this post.

Stay tuned later this month to see the other half of this space…our dining room, which speaks a little more to the French country cottage style I love so much.

Our Living Room – Before We Renovated

Here’s a peek at our living room before we renovated (I told you it was scary, right?!) From popcorn ceilings to tacky light fixtures and a really dated tile near the front door, it was a bit of an eye sore. I was pregnant when we first saw the home, completely in its original, raw state, so I’ll blame it on my pregnancy hormones, but I cried. And perhaps once you see these photos and the before photos in our kitchen renovation post, you’ll understand.

Thanks so much love!! It’s a vintage piece we got from Cole’s grandmother (I think she was gonna get rid of it…thank heavens she didn’t!) definitely one of my fave pieces in our home too!
