One thing that I quickly learned as I enter the second half of the second trimester of pregnancy was that finding clothes to fit is hard. And finding cute maternity clothes isn’t so easy either! Luckily, if you know what to look for, you can find lots of bump-friendly options, like this fun red checkered jumpsuit I’m styling today or this pink midi dress I wore last week. These photos were shot when I was about 20 weeks, so the bump was a bit smaller, but thanks to a few features, it fit perfectly and still does even now.

Click on the read more button below to get the full scoop on this outfit, plus read my tips on how to shop for maternity, bump-friendly finds.

1 – Know What To Look For

When it comes to finding maternity options that are bump-friendly but you can also wear post-pregnancy, you’ll want to opt for dresses, jumpsuits/rompers and tops. Unfortunately, you’ll definitely have to splurge on some maternity denim and bottoms like jeans, shorts and skirts for the most part (the bump will just make things awkward…see 5 for exceptions) but there are SO many options when it comes to other clothing pieces.

2 – Empire State of Mind

When shopping for dresses and rompers especially )and usually even tops too), go for the empire waist. An empire waist silhouette is one that cinches right below your bust, elongating your torso, giving your bump all the room it needs and making the absolute most flattering shape to show off your new bumpie (and what mama doesn’t wanna do that?!) As you can see in the photos above, the red jumpsuit I found cinches just below my waist, allowing room to show off my bump.

3 – Room to Stretch

Go ahead and swear off all non-stretchy materials during pregnancy. Even if it’s a cotton material with the tiniest amount of stretch, you’re gonna want some room for your new curves (and if you’re anything like me, the curves won’t stop at just your bump). This is especially true for those non-empire waist pieces like bodycon dresses that really allow your bump to take centerstage. Just try to find a fabric that’s both thick and stretchy when it comes to the ultra curve-hugging bodycon pieces.

4 – To Top it Off, Go Long

When it coms to shopping non-maternity tops, look for options that are longer than average in the front. I always find myself looking at profile shots of tops when I’m shopping online now so I can imagine where it would lay if a bump was underneath it (hint: it will hit a bit or a lot higher than it does on the non-pregnant model, depending on how far along you are),

5 – Bring on The Elastic (Or Wrap) Bottoms

The one exception when shopping for bottoms that you can find in non-maternity pieces is anything with a drawstring or elastic waist band AND sometimes you can get away with a wrap skirt (if it’s truly wrap and not just for looks – be sure to read!) . Think jogger pants and cinched skirts.

That’s all for now y’all! I’ll try to squeeze in a follow up post with actual round ups of non-maternity, bump-friendly finds for you to shop. I actually just bought a ton to try out today so I’ll especially have some good picks after that! Stay tuned!
